What is the difference between PL and SIL level

Definition of PL and SIL level

Factors considered in PL and SIL level determination

Several factors come into play when determining the PL or SIL level of a system:

Fault tolerance: PL takes into account how well a system can detect and respond to faults. SIL, however, emphasizes the probability of a system failing dangerously.

Error avoidance: PL considers the capability of a system to prevent errors from occurring. SIL, on the other hand, focuses on minimizing the impact of potential errors.

Systematic capability: PL evaluates the effectiveness of processes used in the development and management of a system. SIL looks at the reliability and dependability of these processes.

Experience feedback: PL considers historical data and feedback from similar systems. SIL relies on probabilistic calculations and a quantitative risk assessment.

Application of PL and SIL level in practice

PL and SIL levels are typically used in the design, implementation, and validation of process control systems. They guide engineers and designers in selecting appropriate safety measures while considering the needs of the specific application.

For example, in automotive manufacturing, PL may be applied when designing the control system for robotic arms to ensure the safety of operators working in close proximity. In oil refineries, SIL level determination is crucial for various safety functions, such as emergency shutdown systems or fire and gas detection systems.

It is important to note that PL and SIL levels are not interchangeable. Depending on the industry and regulatory requirements, organizations must comply with the appropriate standards and guidelines for their specific application.
