IEC standard 60529, also known as IP (Ingress Protection) code, provides a classification system for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water. This standard is widely used in industries that manufacture electronic devices, automobiles, and other products that require protection from environmental factors.
The meaning behind IP67
The IP code is composed of two digits, with the first digit representing protection against solid objects and the second digit representing protection against liquids. In the case of IP67, the first digit, "6," indicates complete protection against dust and other solid particles. The highest rating for the first digit is 6, which means the enclosure is dust-tight. The second digit, "7," indicates that the enclosure has protection against the effects of temporary immersion in water up to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Testing procedures for IP67
To receive an IP67 rating, an enclosure must undergo various tests to assess its resistance to solid objects and water immersion. First, it undergoes a test to determine its level of protection against dust. A vacuum is applied to draw in fine dust particles, and if no ingress is detected, it receives a rating of 6 for the first digit. Second, the enclosure is placed in a water tank and submerged at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. If no water seeps into the enclosure and it remains fully functional, it receives a rating of 7 for the second digit.
Applications of IP67-rated devices
Devices or equipment with an IP67 rating are highly sought after due to their superior protection against dust and water ingress. They are commonly used in outdoor settings such as construction sites, marine environments, and sports activities. For example, smartphones with an IP67 rating can be submerged in water for a short period without causing damage to the internal components. Additionally, automotive manufacturers utilize IP67-rated connectors and enclosures to ensure that their vehicles can withstand various weather conditions and off-road environments.
